Service with a Smile

Kaka Retreat guests are soon put at ease with the easy going friendly manner of our knowledgeable staff. They’ll pick you up from the airport or ferry terminal in the courtesy coach and you’ll be treated to old-fashioned good service that’s as individual as you are. Your comfort and enjoyment is paramount.

They also offer a booking service for all the local major activities and attractions. So if it’s fishing charters, guided bird walks or nature adventures on Stewart Island, chat with the team who are more than happy to help.

Of course, when it is time for you to leave, the return courtesy drop off is available for your convenience.

Superior Suites

Our five luxurious suites, located just a short stroll from Stewart Island’s township, provide the perfect haven for your island getaway.

The earthy hues inside harmonize with the native bush setting off the private veranda, where bird song reigns supreme.

Kaka Retreat has a selection of superior suites available, sleeping up to two and three persons respectively.

Modern and spacious, our suites all feature top-of-the-line decor and modern conveniences such as flat-screen LCD televisions, deluxe beds and a kitchenette with convection microwave and fridge.

Boutique toiletries and spa towels accentuate the stylish tiled bathroom. And you won’t have to worry about a thing as all of our serviced suites come complete with linen, sumptuous wool duvets and the comfort of customer-controlled central heating.

And breakfast is served with a smile each morning of your stay!

Units

Catering for up to six people, our comfortable and quiet two* or three bedroom bungalow units offer the space and privacy to unwind and are the ideal base from which to explore Stewart Island.

Whether it’s family, friends – or both – there’s room for everyone and each unit has a dedicated living area perfect to get together and share the day’s adventures.

Complete with cooking facilities, microwave, fridge, TV, central heating, private bathroom, towels and linen, washing machine or laundry service provisions, each unit also features its own veranda to soak up the serenity.

All units are fully self-contained and serviced daily.

Kaka Retreat’s warm and comfortable superior suites and units are fully self-contained and serviced daily, with pleasant interiors complementing the surrounding native bush.

Rimu trees and lush native plants attract an abundance of bird species, particularly New Zealand’s own Tui and Kaka, transforming Kaka Retreat into a bird watcher’s and photographer’s delight.

A waterfront stroll as the sun sets is the perfect end to a day exploring New Zealand’s newest national park. Guided by our sensor lighting, return to your cosy abode at Kaka Retreat and enjoy the comfort of central heating, electric blankets and wool duvets.

Families love Kaka Retreat and we’ve got the littlies’ needs covered with portacots and highchairs.

Television is standard in all rooms. In keeping with our desire to provide an undisturbed paradise, a courtesy phone is available at reception.

Our wireless internet service is ideal if you have to check in on business or to email friends and family with tales of the fabulous time you’re having on Stewart Island.

To explore the island, jump onto one of our mountain bikes. The hire fleet features new bikes of various sizes, complete with shock suspension, comfortable seats, night reflectors, puncture repair kits – and helmets, of course.

And if experiencing the great outdoors on foot is more your style, you can also hire the latest outdoor and hiking equipment at competitive rates.

Nestled amongst beautiful native bush, overlooking Halfmoon Bay, Kaka Retreat guests can appreciate the peace and tranquility of a truly magnificent setting where silence is broken only by the calls of the Tui, Fantail, Kakariki and, of course, the infamous cheeky native parrot, the Kaka.
